The Nokomis Exchange

Nokomis is an association of grandmothers assuming the role of culture-bearers, transmitting culture to children. Goals are the preservation and appreciation of culture, as well as the fostering of understanding between people of diverse cultures.

Nokomis is not a structured organization and there are no fees rather, it is an international movement. The only requirements are participation and communication of your activities so other grandmothers can benefit from your experiences and suggestions.

Nokomis is so called in honor of the grandmother of Hiawatha in Henry Wadsworth Lonfellow's poem.

"Many things Nokomis taught him of the stars that shine in heaven;

Showed him Ishkoodah, the comet,

Ishkoodah, with fiery tresses...."
